The Patriot League Champion Army Black Knights led the way with four student-athletes earning men's tennis All-League honors, while American, Lehigh and Navy each had two members. Bucknell and Colgate rounded out the All-League teams each having one student-athlete honored.
Army senior Carl Fisher (Tampa, Fla./home schooled) was voted the 2006 Men's Tennis Player of the Year by the League's head coaches and earned first team recognition. Navy freshman Nate Nelms (St. Mary's, Ga./Camden County) earned Rookie of the Year honors. Army head coach Jim Poling was named the 2006 Coach of the Year.
Fisher went 13-10 overall at No. 1 singles including going 5-2 in Patriot League play. He also went 9-15 in doubles with a 4-4 mark in Patriot League play.
Nelms had an impressive rookie campaign going 19-18 at No. 1 singles and 11-7 at No. 1 doubles. Along with being named Rookie of the Year Nelms also was voted to the All-League First-Team.
Poling lead the Black Knights to 12-15 record overall and 5-1 mark in the Patriot League this season. Army will be making their second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
American senior Nicolas Frayssinoux (Boulogne, France/Notre Dame Boulogne) earned first-team honors for going 12-8 this spring at the No. 1 position. Frayssinoux also went 13-6 in doubles this season and he was named Patriot League Player of the Month for March. Sophomore Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Country Day-Upper School) of Bucknell was also named to the All-League first-team after going 3-3 at both No. 1 singles and doubles in the Patriot League.
Colgate junior Chris Innes (Southport, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) was named to the All-League First-Team after going 3-3 at No. 1 singles for the Raiders. Innes also went 3-3 at No. 1 doubles. Rounding out the All-League first-team was Lehigh senior Randall Smalley (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Brophy College Prep). This season Smalley went 4-2 in the Patriot League at No. 1 singles and 3-2 at No. 1 doubles.
A trio of Black Knight players made the All-League Second-Team with junior John Houghton (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley), sophomore Eddie Kang (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and freshman Phil Muhawi (Silver Spring, Md./The Landon School) each earning honors. Houghton went 14-8 overall in singles play this season and picked up 10 wins in doubles play. Kang went 13-15 in singles play this spring and went 15-12 in doubles play. Muhawi had a strong rookie season picking up 12 wins in singles and seven wins in doubles play.
Senior Juancarlo Vazquez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Centre Educativo Superior Vocational) of American also earned second-team All-League honors after going 7-10 this spring in singles and 2-2 in regular season Patriot League matches. Lehigh junior Ryan Lloyd (Fort Pierce, Fla./St. Edward's) joined him on the second-team after going 4-2 in the Patriot League at No. 2 singles. Rounding out the All-League Second-Team is Navy junior Adrian Lai (Tucson, Ariz./University). This spring Lai went 14-7 at No. 2 and 3 singles and picked up eight wins in doubles play.
Army won the Patriot League Championship and the automatic bid the NCAA Tournament. The Black Knights will play No. 8 Virginia on Saturday, May 13 at 10 a.m.
The Patriot League, which was founded on the principles of admitting athletes who are academically representative of their class, is in its second decade of academic and athletic excellence. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of the undergraduate experience. The Patriot League, which began as a successful Division I-AA football conference in 1986 and became an all-sport conference in 1990, includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members and three associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have played leadership roles in the shaping of our country. In the most recent NCAA Graduation Rate Report of student-athletes, the Patriot League ranked FIRST among NCAA Division I conferences.
